We have had an exciting week in the ESOL classroom!
Students are working hard and practicing English.

PreKindergarten and Kindergarten students are learning about winter clothes.

Sing this song with your PreK or K child to help them remember which winter clothes belong on their head, neck, hands, and feet.
It is snowing, it is snowing, on my head, on my head
I need a hat, I need a hat, on my head, on my head.
It is snowing, it is snowing, on my neck, on my neck.
I need a scarf, I need a scarf, on my neck, on my neck.
It is snowing, it is snowing, on my body, on my body.
I need a coat, I need a coat, on my body, on my body.
It is snowing, it is snowing, on my hands, on my hands.
I need some mittens, I need some mittens, on my hands, on my hands.
It is snowing, it is snowing, on my feet, on my feet.
I need some boots, I need some boots, on my feet, on my feet.

First and Second Grade are reading from their anthologies. First Grade is also learning about the Earth. They know that the Earth has more water than land.

Third grade is using adjectives in descriptive sentences. Students like chocolate cake, crunchy carrots, and tasty pizza.

Fourth and Fifth grade are learning about Martin Luther King, Jr., President barack Obama's inauguration, and the important buildings in Washington, D.C. Students have drawn pictures of the White House, the Washington Monument, and the Capitol Building.

Fifth grade students are also studying multiple meaning words. They know that words like 'key' and 'pitcher' have more than one meaning in English.

The LAS Language Test is coming up soon. During this test, your child will be asked to speak, listen, read, and write in English. Help your child succeed by encouraging him or her to read for 20 minutes each night. Read some favorite English books or magazines as a family. Watch some of your favorite T.V. shows in English or listen to English music.

Has your child told you about our classroom library?

esol_wikipic_002.JPG

We just added many new books to our classroom library, thanks to a large donation by Jane Davis. Your child can borrow books like Charlotte's Web, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, and Black Beauty. We also have several bilingual and Spanish books.

Incentive Program

If your child reads five books from our classroom library and completes reader response questions, he or she is welcome to choose a prize from our classroom treasure chest! Response questions are located in students' reader response folders. Students are welcome to take library books and reader response folders home.

Congratulations to Diana Atenco and Karishma Kaushal for being the first students to reach our five book goal!!!

Please visit the Wicomico County Public Library to borrow books, videos, and CDs for FREE! Encouraging your child to read is one of the best ways to help him or her learn English! Children who read for fun are also more likely to succeed in school. (For more student success tips, click here.)

Read Books Online
To read books online, visit the International Children's Digital Library. At the ICDL, you can read books in dozens of different languages. Books in the International Children's Digital Library come from all over the world.
